Cook Your Home: Re-Imagining the Role of the Kitchen
Spring 2020: Thesis Advisor - Prof Alex Schweder
Cook your home re-imagines the kitchen as a makerspace to give creators the opportunity to make objects for the home using healthy materials. City living means small apartments and no extra space for hobbies, so the kitchen is the logical place to be creative. However, bringing making materials into the space we prepare meals means reconsidering the health of the materials we chose to live with and reexamining the functionality of kitchen tools.
If we consider our home as an ingestible environment, we will give greater attention to the materials we chose to surround ourselves with. With this in mind, I explored creating a new material, made from food, that could be formed into household objects like bowls and candlesticks. The project also looks at the tools in the kitchen with the goal of expanding use of the space. I explored using shop tools in the kitchen and kitchen tools to make. I then selected the Kitchenaid mixer as a tool to bridge the gap between the shop and the kitchen. I designed a lathe attachment to allow the turning of the new food-based material into home objects.
By considering materials and the tools in the kitchen, this project aims to expand the possibility of making at home and help our homes be healthier places for our families.
